Spring Break is:

Spring Break is quickly coming to an end.  We didn't go anywhere as we had planned and we didn't do anything terribly exciting but it was a nice break from our usual routine.  Here is a summary of what we were up to around the Farm :)

Spring Break is:

Daffodils

Baby Ducks!

Messenger chats with far off friends

Sneaking out for early morning runs before the kids wake up

Soaking up the sunshine in the ferry lineup

Playing outside until dark

Putting on my 'Blue Job' suit and putting out a chimney fire

New pets- Mo Willems and Antonio Banderas

Watching the grass grow

Catching frogs

Wearing t shirts

Checking in with your personal trainer and discovering all your hard work really is paying off!

Snuggly dogs

Pigs in the pasture

Laundry hanging out to dry

Doctoring a sick chicken

Eating PB&J and Jam&Nutella sandwiches for dinner with the pigs
 Happy Spring!

Out to Pasture

Well jeez, talk about a productive day!  My day started around 7:00 and considering its Sunday and I was out until nearly midnight last night I'll count that as a pretty good start.  Fed all the creatures including the kids before dropping them at my mom's house for the morning.  10:30am found me getting my ass kicked in Brett's HIIT class.  You can check out Brett and Saltwild Fitness and Nutrition here.  Then off to meet friends to help move the last of Mandy's stuff into her new place.  A quick break for lunch and then home again.

Worked on some fencing because I decided to take a chance and let the pigs out into the pasture.  I had thought up all these plans for electric pig enclosures but when it came down to it I didn't want to spend the money so I'm going to try to use what I have.  Plus the pigs' stall in the barn desperately needed a thorough cleaning and I can't doing it while they're in there.

Indi and the pigs having a nice time saying hello.

The pigs doing an excellent job rooting up the swamp grass.  Keep up the good work!

The sheep wanted to get in on the fun

The only complaint I have with productive days is when its all said and done, I still have to make dinner.  Luckily the kids had already decided on breakfast for dinner so it was a lovely meal of Paleo pancakes, sausages and eggs.

Oh good, its almost bedtime!

Duckling Day!

Yesterday was Duckling Day!  I packed the kids into the car, invited my mom along for the trip and headed down to Fanny Bay to a great little hatchery called Holiday Hill.  (You can check them out at www.guppy.ca/ )

No road trip would be complete without a bout of upset tummy from my boy S.  So we sat in the Tim Horton's parking lot while he held a bag in his lap for a bit.  It wasn't until the prospect of not getting a breakfast sandwich, due to said upset tummy was realized, that the upset tummy miraculously disappeared.

A couple wrong turns later(never take my mom's advice on directions especially since I'd been to the hatchery before) and we arrived at Holiday Hill.  $25 later I had my five khaki campbell ducklings and the kids each handed over their $5 for a khaki campbell cross.

The kids got to hold day old turkey chicks(they're nearly as ugly as babies as they are as grown birds) then we had a little tour of the farm.  S hid behind me at the turkey pen whispering loudly to his sister, "don't look the turkeys in the eye!  It makes them mad!"

Home again with our box of babies.  These little fuzzy butts currently reside in the bathroom as I have this terrible habit of buying critters before I have a space alloted for them.  Good thing my other bad habits are few ;)

Happy Sunday!!

Digging to China?

Apparently the pigs are trying to tell me they need more space.  I'll add it to my to-do list fellas!

A Morning Run with the Whales!

While this has absolutely nothing to do with my farm, this morning two of my friends, myself and my dog Indi hit the Spit for a run.  On our way back we were treated to a great show from a pod of Killer Whales meandering their way South through Sutil Channel.  It was a fantastic way to start the morning and I'm so glad to have caught a few albeit miniscule photos of them!

Dogs are the rottenest!

My two farm dogs from Alberta are unfamiliar with fences.  They don't seem to understand that fences are to keep bad guys, deer, wolves etc out and rotten dogs in.  It started with Zama...

Exhibit A:  Zama

She started crawling through any of the five gates on the property to bring back anything related to a dead deer; bones, legs, hooves or skulls to gnaw on in the yard.  Then a couple weeks ago, Bjorn discovered he too could haul his giant carcass through the gates...

Exhibit B:  Bjorn

It didn't take long before I heard through the 'Island Grapevine' that my neighbor was unhappy with my rotten dogs.  Last week I picked up a roll of stucco wire and set to work fencing all my gates.  *insert giant sigh here*  Boy, I was proud of my afternoon of hard work.  A job well done!

The next day I came back from a day spent in town to find my dogs waiting for me outside the yard.  What the hell?!  They both discovered they could sqeeeeeeeze through where the two gates meet on the driveway.  Grrrrrrrrr!!  Next step...I had to run rods in between the two gates to hold them from being opened.

This is their new tactic.  Let's dig under the gate...

Dogs.  The rottenest.

Welcome to The Dancing Dexter Farm!

A new farm!  A fresh start!  A new blog!  The world is looking peachy!  Its been a while, I'll admit I'm feeling a bit rusty at this whole blogging thing.  But bear with me, I promise there's lots of fun to come once I get rolling.  I have lots to catch you up on, a couple months worth of stuff actually.  Right now I'm researching electric fence enclosures for pigs so stay tuned for what I'm sure will be an electrifying learning experience!

For now I'll leave you with a picture of my favorite dancing Dexter ;)
